Promoting Wound Healing

The newest wound dressing uses a combination of several ingredients to remove exudate and promote healing.    In order to facilitate wound healing, Promogran Prisma™ Matrix combines collagen, oxidized regenerated cellulose (ORC) and silver ORC+, according to the manufacturer, Johnson & Johnson Wound Management. The company says the chronic wound dressing removes the destructive elements of the wound, maintains a bacterial balance, reduces bacterial growth and utilizes silver to ensure healthy growth of tissue.    In addition, the collagen creates a biodegradable matrix to ensure cellular invasion and capillary growth, and also fosters an environment to promote the formation of granulation tissue, epithelialization and optimal wound healing, according to Johnson & Johnson.    Johnson & Johnson notes the Promogran Prisma Matrix is indicated to manage diabetic, venous and pressure ulcers, as well as ulcers caused by mixed vascular etiologies. The company says the dressing is also indicated for full- and partial-thickness wounds, donor sites and other bleeding surface wounds, abrasions, traumatic wounds healing by secondary intention and dehisced surgical wounds. Johnson & Johnson says the product is not indicated for third-degree burns or patients who are sensitive to silver, ORC or collagen.    Company: Johnson & Johnson Wound Management    Product: Promogran Prisma Matrix™    For more info, circle 399 on your reader service card

A Supportive AFO

A new version of a tried-and-true brand of ankle foot orthosis (AFO) has emerged and may be helpful in managing several conditions.    The California AFO, the latest addition to Eastern Podiatry Lab’s Richie Brace® AFO lineup, provides enhanced stability for the foot and eliminates motion in the hindfoot and ankle, according to the manufacturer. The custom AFO is indicated for patients with severe degenerative joint disease of the ankle or hindfoot, end-stage posterior tibial tendon dysfunction (PTTD) and Charcot arthropathy.    The California AFO features a leather boot closure and patented Arch Suspender, both of which lock the foot and lower leg into the brace, according to the company. It adds that the rearfoot stabilizing bar offers extrinsic support to control frontal plane rotation.    Eastern Podiatry Lab says the fully padded plastazote liner is laminated under the leather, which enhances comfort for patients. Patients can easily tighten the closure straps and put on the AFO since the open entry system does not have “D” rings, laces or a closed tongue, according to the manufacturer.    The company adds that the product’s closed, solid heel cup can prevent the orthotic from “bulging” away from malleolar control areas and the orthotic’s trim lines avoid irritation over malleoli and talonavicular joint areas.    Company: Eastern Podiatry Lab, Inc.    Product: Richie Brace® California AFO    For more info, circle 401 on your reader service card

Fits Like A Glove

Constant exposure to medicine can affect one’s hands but a new lotion can replace moisture more efficiently.    The Gloves in a Bottle lotion blocks drying irritants from the skin while the hand retains its natural moisture, according to the manufacturer Gloves in a Bottle. The company says the lotion is an improvement over disposable latex gloves, which can dry hands and cause allergic reactions. It maintains that the lotion is better than some medications, which can cause skin disorders.    The company notes that Gloves in a Bottle is virtually undetectable once it dries. It lasts at least four hours and comes off naturally with exfoliated skin cells.    Company: Gloves in a Bottle    Product: Gloves in a Bottle    For more info, circle 402 on your reader service card

A New Diagnostic Tool

When testing patients in the office, you need a pinprick sensitive enough to guarantee precise results.    Jacob’s Medipin generates a focused center surround field effect that augments the acuity of stimulation and its annulus standardizes point pressure to improve the consistence of testing, according to the manufacturer, Medipin.    The device has a short faceted point that will stretch and not penetrate the skin surface, and the annular apparatus encircles the point with a perimeter of dull stimulation, according to Medipin. The company adds that the high sensitivity of Jacob’s Medipin allows one to apply less pressure to cause stimulation. Medipin also adds that the pin contains no metal parts so it will not corrode.    Company: Medipin    Product: Jacob’s Medipin    For more info, circle 405 on your reader service card

Restoring Tissue In Patients With Edema

Many patients with edema face disconnected cells and infection, making tissue restoration paramount.    Actipatch™ can help restore tissues by reestablishing communication among cells and suppressing vasodilatory response, according to the product’s manufacturer, BioElectronics. When cells do not communicate due to edema, Actipatch coordinates signals to synchronize cell activity, returning tissue to normal function, according to the company.    When one uses electrotherapy such as Actipatch at low power, the company says the results are equivalent to those found with high-power devices. The company says the low power level allows the administration of therapy in a wearable patch.    Company: BioElectronics    Product: Actipatch™    For more info, circle 406 on your reader service card
