If you have patients with running shoes beyond their prime, you can refer them to the Nike Reuse-A-Shoe program at www.nikereuseashoe.com/ .
More than two decades ago, Nike began looking for a way to reduce the company's environmental footprint as well as the amount of shoes that ended up in landfills. Nike first started by collecting athletic shoes at key retail locations and shortly thereafter teamed up with other recycling centers to establish shoe collections in communities across the country.
Recycling shoes using this program is extremely easy. Patients can bring up to 10 pairs of shoes to any Reuse-A-Shoe collection location, which are located at all U.S. Nike retail stores as well as some global Nike locations, all U.S. Converse stores, and places like universities, athletic clubs, special events and community recycling centers. Find a shoe recycling location near you by visiting http://www.nikereuseashoe.com/get-involved/drop-off-locations .
The shoes are then formulated into Nike Grind — a raw material made from recycled athletic shoes and Nike manufacturing scrap — which is used in all types of surfaces.
To build these surfaces, Nike works with industry-leading surfacing companies, building long-term partnerships and developing innovative, premier products including gym/weight room flooring, outdoor synthetic courts, running tracks, playground and safety surfaces, synthetic turf infill, indoor synthetic courts, indoor wood courts and carpet underlayment.
Check out this list for the part of the shoe that is used and approximately how many pairs of shoes (or the manufacturing scrap equivalent) generally go into each type of surface containing Nike Grind.
