Objectives: Upon completion of this educational activity, participants should be able to:
• discuss key elements of the protocol for the SIDESTEP study and how they contributed to the study’s clinical outcomes;
• compare the clinical response rates reported for ertapenem and piperacillin/tazobactam in the SIDESTEP study;
• compare and contrast the spectrum of activity for ertapenem and piperacillin/tazobactam;
• describe the wound scoring system that was utilized in the SIDESTEP study;
• discuss common pathogens in diabetic foot infections; and
• discuss the role of appropriate culturing with diabetic foot wounds.
