Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this educational activity, the participant should be able to:
• describe pathways to foot ulceration in diabetic patients;
• list the most frequent and important bacteria that cause diabetic foot infections;
• identify the key elements of diagnosing soft tissue infection;
• identify the key elements and controversies surrounding diagnosis of bone infection;
• select an appropriate antibiotic regimen for treating diabetic foot infections; and
• discuss resistant organisms in diabetic foot lesions, their consequences and management.
